In order to make sustainable buildings with less energy and more efficiency he designs buildings in such a way that they absorb more and more energy from natural resources including sunlight, wind and geothermal conditions thus producing energy for projects on the respective sites. During the course of some recent years he has adopted a new design approach of producing energy “on site”. Since the major goal for all of his projects is to achieve the environmental sustainability so he puts so much attention to location, climate, geographical, geological, cultural, and social influences of site. He focuses majorly on the physical features of each of his design. With evolution in the world of technology he is up to the integration of regional techniques and industrial methods for his designs. Underutilized infrastructure can result in tremendous waste.Smith has great passion for the use of vernacular and indigenous forms and compositions and this can be seen in his work as well. Not just repair but also understanding its inefficiencies and using technology to manage use as it relates to our fluctuating population in the city. I also think our infrastructure needs to be rethought. I’m hoping that this is being addressed strategically by the and by the design community create new environments that attract investment back into the core. Over time, the impact of this departure from the center of the city might have detrimental consequences. That number may be slightly off but in principle, I’m concerned about the decay of space inside the core and the displacement of population to different typologies outside the core. What is Chicago’s biggest built environment challenge?Īdaptive reuse for a core that I understand to be approximately 11 percent vacant. I would love to design a supertall tower in Chicago-maybe a net zero-energy supertall. Do you think supertalls will return to Chicago? Would you like to design a tall building for Chicago? Many of your firm’s projects are supertall buildings in other cities. If you were not an architect, what would you be? Not just the architecture but also being around creative clients that have great passion and a wonderful sense of humor. We are also currently working on two theater projects, which I really enjoy. Developing designs and guidelines for the execution of districts and cities is very rewarding. Our master plan work for new developments and cities is also very important to our vision for sustainable environments. We are currently working on everything from supertall low-carbon towers to adaptive reuse projects which I thoroughly enjoy-primarily because much of the work is in uncharted territory and it demands the full process of analysis, design and delivery of the projects including procurement strategies and innovative system designs. I like working on a range of project types and scales. What project have you enjoyed working on most during your career thus far? We recently sat down with Gordon to learn more about his work. In 2009 Gordon was selected as Chicago’s Best Emerging Architect by the Chicago Reader, and in 2013 he was elected to the College of Fellows at the American Institute of Architects. His designs have repeatedly been recognized by the American Institute of Architects. Gordon’s work also includes performing arts centers, museums and urban master plans. These landmark projects strike a balance with their environmental contexts while still pursuing energy independence by harnessing the power of natural forces on site. Gordon’s work includes the design of the world’s first net zero-energy skyscraper, the Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou, China (designed when he was with SOM) the world’s tallest building, Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and most recently the design of Astana Expo 2017 and its sustainable legacy community for Astana, Kazakhstan. Prior to founding AS+GG in 2006, Gordon was an Associate Partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and a Director of Design for VOA Associates. He and Adrian Smith are responsible for a staggeringly large number of the world’s supertall skyscrapers. Gordon Gill is a founding partner of the award-winning Chicago firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG). It's totally surreal and mind-blowing that we have been entrusted with this bird,” says NFWC Director Ryan Reines. “In the bird world, this is among the pinnacle as far as the caliber of rarity and beauty and size. One look at her reinforces why this name is well chosen. Her name, Raja, means “royalty” in the Sanskrit language spoken throughout Southeast Asia, the natural range for her species. Here, she'll have a safe home and become an ambassador of sorts for her amazing species (Buceros rhinoceros). Raja, a rare rhinoceros hornbill, is the most recent endangered animal to arrive at the North Florida Wildlife Center (NFWC). Soon after, a beetle larva is tossed her way, and with a flash of the bright yellow hornlike casque growing on top of her head, she snatches the bug out of the air and gulps it down. Hence, it is not so surprising that you can observe all 10 species of hornbills, along with over 300 bird species, including rare and endangered species.A plump fresh blueberry gently arcs through the air and over to Raja, who catches it deftly in her impressive hornbill bill. And it is recognised as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA). The park is also believed to be one of the world’s oldest rainforest, dating back over 130 million years. It ranges over 454 square miles filled with lush green forest hosting a diverse range of insects, birds, and mammals. Royal Belum State Park, Perak is one of the most important protected areas in Malaysia. Here, you can observe the Rhinoceros and Wrinkled hornbills, along with the Critically Endangered Helmeted Hornbill. Hornbill Valley, Taman Negara, Pahang – If you prefer to stay away from tourist destinations, the Hornbill Valley is a suitable, quiet location for Hornbill watching as it is only frequented by local birdwatchers. Here, you can observe 9 hornbill species, except the Plain-pouched hornbill. Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu is the largest manmade lake in Southeast Asia, surrounded by lush rainforest which hosts a diverse range of plant and animal species. So, if are interested in Hornbill watching, or just bird watching in Malaysia, here are few places that you might want to consider in your itinerary. Also, wildlife agencies and conservation authorities in SE Asia are enforcing stricter rules and tougher punishment, along with devising conservation strategies and action plans to address this issue. In response, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) revised the conservation status of Helmeted Hornbill from Near Threatened to Critically Endangered. The hornbill casque is used to make carved jewellery and ornaments for decorative purposes. This is valued around US$1000 in the black market in China. In the last nine years, their population has rapidly declined and has been decimated due to a high demand for their casque. Sadly, the uniqueness of the casque in the Helmeted hornbill is also a cause for concern. This species has a solid casque, which is also used as a weapon when fighting against rival males. However, the purpose of the casque remains contentious, albiet they are probably used to recognise a mate or augment vocalisation, since they are hollow or spongy, except in the Helmeted hornbill. The long, curved beak is actually very useful for snatching and subduing prey, or picking figs and seeds from trees. So, what is the first thing you notice when you see a hornbill? Most probably, its long, curved beak and a bright casque – an enlargement on top of its beak. In the end, we failed what we had set out to do, but we learned a valuable lesson – to experience and realise that the Rhinoceros hornbill is one of the most intelligent, caring and majestic bird species of Malaysia. This is where I spent days with my colleague trying to hide our identity and to figure out why the male hornbill did not approach its nest. Here, I was tasked with observation and data collection on the nesting behaviour of the Rhinoceros Hornbill. My first encounter with one of the hornbills of Malaysia was in a fragmented forest, deep in the heart of Merapoh. For years, Pepita had imported Italian ballerinas as guest artists, infusing their strong pointe work with the lyricism of the French style that served as the basis for ballet training in Russia. Petipa had a genuine star in ballerina Pierina Legnani, who danced the role of Odette/Odile at the revival’s premiere. While not an unqualified hit, Swan Lake was a solid success. With Petipa in the lead, some music was transferred between acts, some numbers cut, others added. The score is mammoth and the relative length of the four acts unbalanced. What Tchaikovsky had composed was far ahead of its time, but the 1895 team forged on. Tchaikovsky’s brother, Modeste, labored to streamline the story, while conductor Riccardo Drigo took on the unenviable task of editing the sometimes unwieldy musical score. Ivanov choreographed Act IV, the second lakeside scene, and Petipa supplied dances for Acts I and III. The performance was a success and plans were laid for a revival of the entire ballet in 1895. Petersburg the next year included a revival of Swan Lake Act II, the first lakeside scene, with new choreography by Lev Ivanov, ballet master Marius Petipa’s assistant. Tchaikovsky’s score was admired but considered unsuitable for ballet-not sufficiently dansante. Anti-German sentiment fueled opinions against both the dance and the story, which was thought to have originated in Germanic legend. The choreography by the otherwise unknown German ballet master Julius Reisinger, was admittedly undistinguished. The original Moscow production, now generally regarded as a failure, actually achieved mild success and saw more performances over more years than most ballets premiered on the Moscow stage. Tchaikovsky longed for a successful revival of his first ballet. Petersburg production of 1895 that Swan Lake took the form we know today. Tchaikovsky composed his score for Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet in 1877, but it was not until Petipa and Ivanov’s St. Swan Lake has inspired countless choreographers, who, in their own productions, seek to extend the ideas and meanings suggested in the work of its creators: composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The current production of Kent Stowell’s Swan Lake, in a revised staging and featuring new designs, premiered in 2003 to open PNB’s inaugural season in Marion Oliver McCaw Hall. Pacific Northwest Ballet’s 1981 production was a significant milestone as the first full-length ballet re-created for the Company. With its fantastical plot filled with romance, sorcery, and betrayal, Swan Lake offers dancers the ultimate challenge of a dual role-Odette, trapped in the body of a swan while awaiting an oath of true love to set her free, and Odile–the temptress daughter of Baron von Rothbart–who plots the downfall of Odette’s true love, Siegfried. Swan Lake is considered by many to be the greatest classical ballet of all time. This threshold subsequently was found to correspond to ∼6.2 × 10 3 immune fluorescence molecules per cell. A threshold for high-level surface ROR1 (ROR1-Hi) was established in the training set that could distinguish cases into ROR1-Hi vs ROR1-Lo subgroups that differed significantly in their median time from diagnosis to initial treatment, or treatment-free survival (TFS). 26 Cases were randomly assigned to a training set or validation set of 797 or 771 patients, respectively. 43 This association between high-level expression of ROR1 and adverse outcome was established in a subsequent study of 1568 patients by the CLL Research Consortium. 42 Similarly, transgenic B-cell expression of ROR1 accelerates development of leukemia and shortens survival of Eμ-TCL1-transgenic mice, which develop a CD5 B-cell leukemia that mimics CLL. In a study of 20 patients, Daneshmanesh and colleagues found patients with CLL cells that had high levels of ROR1 were more likely to have progressive disease than were those with CLL with low levels of ROR1. In relation to balance, when we move our head the vestibule detects these movements and sends signals to the brain to indicate in what position we are or if we have momentarily lost our balance. The cochlea transforms these vibrations into electrical impulses, which travel through a series of structures that lead to the auditory cortex of the brain. When a sound reaches the ear, the sound waves impinge on the internal structures of the ear causing them to vibrate. The vestibulocochlear nerve is responsible for sending information from the cochlea and vestibule to the brain, stimuli which will be interpreted in the form of sound and balance. While the cochlear part of the nerve is responsible for the sense of hearing, the vestibular part is responsible for aspects related to balance. This nerve carries somatic afferent fibers from structures in the inner ear. The vestibulocochlear nerve (scientific name: nervus vestibulocochlearis) is the eighth cranial nerve (CN VIII), which is divided into two parts, the vestibular and the cochlear, both divisions being in charge of sensory function. When the second is not working well, the consequence is dizziness. When the first fails, our hearing suffers. The auditory nerve is made up of two nerves of its own: the cochlear nerve, which carries information about sound, and the vestibular nerve, which carries information about balance. In this post we explain in detail what the auditory nerve is. Its role is key to communicate, as it is responsible for processing the auditory impulses from the outer ear.įor this reason, when the auditory nerve is damaged and does not function properly, hearing loss always occurs. One of them, responsible for balance and hearing, is the auditory nerve, also called the vestibulocochlear nerve or the statoacoustic nerve. The human skull has twelve pairs of nerves connected to the brain. The auditory nerve, also known as the vestibulocochlear nerve or the statoacoustic nerve, is responsible for auditory function and balance. What is the function of the auditory nerve? In this article we are going to answer the question ‘’What is the function of the auditory nerve?’’ We will explain what the auditory nerve is, what its parts are and its functions. Let’s take a closer look at the importance of this nerve. The way it sends information to the brain is somewhat complex, involving multiple pathways and activating several specific regions and types of neurons. The vestibulocochlear nerve constitutes the eighth cranial nerve pair and its function is essential for our survival, since it is thanks to it that we can hear and maintain our balance. |
